What kind of book is the Bible?

The Bible is divided into the "Old Testament," written before Jesus was born, and the "New Testament," which compiles Jesus' life and teachings. There are many Japanese translations, but the "New Interconfessional Translation of the Bible, with Sequel to the Old Testament" ( Japan Bible Society ) is the one used in Catholic mass. The Franciscan translation ( San Paulo ) also has annotations, which can be helpful when reading.

For first-time readers, we recommend the four Gospels of Jesus: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Tell me about Christmas

It is the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus , and means "Mass of Christ." The exact date of Jesus' birthday is unknown. It is said that Christmas came to be celebrated on December 25th around the 4th century, replacing the Roman custom of the winter solstice festival.

What is a priest? What is a sister?

A priest is a clergyman who is also called a priest. There are several priests in the Sendai Central District, and they live together at Motoderakoji Church.

Priests administer the sacraments, including the Mass, and have the role of teaching and guiding believers. Because they are fathers for all, they do not marry and dedicate themselves to God and the Church.

In addition to priests, there are also monks (brothers) and nuns (sisters) who consecrate themselves for life to God and man by taking three vows.

What kind of festival is Easter?

The resurrection of Jesus is the greatest joy of Christians. We celebrate Jesus' resurrection on the third day after he was crucified, died, and buried. Resurrection is not just resurrection; it means that God raised Jesus to life as a new body and opened the way to salvation for mankind through Jesus. This means that after death, we can be resurrected to a new life, just like Christ was resurrected, and enter the kingdom of God.

The three days immediately before Easter are the most solemn liturgical days of the year, with the "Lord's Supper Mass," "The Passion of the Lord," and "The Holy Vigil of the Easter." The baptism of adults is also held at the Easter Vigil.

The timing of Easter is fixed as the Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox, and varies by about one month depending on the year. The Easter season lasts for 50 days after Easter, during which the celebration of Easter continues.
